Coimbatore : In its bid to prevent plastic littering, Aavin, the major milk producer in Tamil Nadu is all set to put in place a collecting mechanism by which used milk packets will be collected at its depots and zonal officers, through Aavin delivery boys all over the state.
Coimbatore : In its bid to prevent plastic littering, Aavin, the major milk producer in Tamil Nadu is all set to put in place a collecting mechanism by which used milk packets will be collected at its depots and zonal officers, through Aavin delivery boys all over the state. “We are currently working on the modalities for taking the covers back and auctioning them through MSTC Limited, as we do with our damaged packets,” said a senior Aavin official.
"The buyback of empty cover policy is aimed at preventing the disposing of plastic milk covers in garbage bins by the public and consumers, since Aavin distributes over 40 lakh milk packets packaging 23 lakh liters of milk, every day" said the official.
To achieve a plastic-free environment, Aavin has moved in to check usage of plastic in its outlets by replacing plastic cups with stainless steel glasses and cups. It has also planned to replace plastic straws with paper straws in its outlets of which over 4 lakh are used in Aavin outlets all over the state. "The packaging material will also be converted to cardboard boxes after abandoning plastic ones,” said a senior official in Coimbatore.
He also reiterated that the buyback initiative of Aavin would be put in place immediately, for which an emergency meeting has been called for. "We will discuss the modalities and start collecting the empty milk packets from the day after tomorrow. The initiative has been well received by the public and they are happy to cooperate with this eco-friendly initiative," revealed the senior official.
