Hydro power generation drops down due to insufficient monsoon rainfall in the Nilgiris

The Nilgiris : The failure of northeast monsoon across the district of Nilgiris has led to reduction in hydro electric power generation. Not just the Nilgiris but power plants across the state of TN are taking a hit as the northeast monsoons failed to bring adequate rainfall.

The Nilgiris : The failure of northeast monsoon across the district of Nilgiris has led to reduction in hydro electric power generation. Not just the Nilgiris but power plants across the state of TN are taking a hit as the northeast monsoons failed to bring adequate rainfall.

The fall in dam water levels across the Nilgiris has directly impacted the hydro power generation plants. Dams -- Upper Bhavani, Avalanche, Pykara, Emerald, Kundha, Gedhai along with 12 other dams are regarded to be the prime source for hydro power generation. A consolidated power of 834 MW has been generated from these power plants.

After power generation, the water will be released through Kundha, Gedhai, Barali and Bhavani for irrigation purposes. However, the volume for power generation depends directly on the rainfall in the catchment areas of the dams.

Presently, the upper Bhavani dam which has a full capacity of 210 feet stands at 130 feet which has led to reduced power generation. As the summer is about to begin in another months time, the water levels are expected to lower down further. Hence, a shortage in power generation is expected in the power plants in the Nilgiris district.
