The 48-day elephant rejuvenation camp conducted by the Tamil Nadu State Government had begun at Thekkampatti near Mettupalayam on December 14. Among the 28 female temple elephants that were brought to the elephant rejuvenation camp, Male elephants are usually domesticated at temples in Kerala whereas female elephants are domesticated at temples in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Female elephants generally don’t possess tusks, whereas some may have tusks of a smaller size. Since Lakshmi the elephant from Manakkula Vinayaga temple in Puducherry has long tusks as seen in male elephants, she became popular. Lakshmi is a hit with the mahouts at the camp who are of the opinion that long tusks are very rare in female elephants.
