The liquor sales from TASMAC outlets has set a record turnover of over Rs.500 crore this Pongal season, thus leaving behind even the combined box office collections of blockbuster Pongal movies 'Petta' and 'Viswasam'.
The TN Government has pocketed over Rs.500 crores through its 5140 outlets in the state this Pongal season from the sales proceedings for the period of January 14 to 17, according to a report released by News18.
A TASMAC official told News18 “While the liquor sales touched Rs.143 crore on Bhogi day, (against 133 Cr. last year) the sale clocked 209 crores on Pongal day (against 204 cr. last year). Overall a good 10% increase is registered this year over and above last year”.
“This phenomenal liquor sale was registered, despite January 16 and 17 being a dry day, with all liquor shops closed,” said the official.
