The Nilgiris : Heavy frost prevailing in the Nilgiris has perturbed the tea planters, as young tea leaves which will fetch them a bounty have started to wilt away.

"Not just the frost, the uneven climate conditions through the day has become a serious threat for the farmers, especially tea planters. The budding leaves are the worst affected", opine the tea planters from Ketti Valley.

Seconding the opinion, tea planters from Palada, Katteri, Thudhormattam, Selas, Kilinjada, Karumpalam, Kollumalai also lament that due to existing harsh weather conditions, there could be a heavy decline in tea leaves trade.

While most of the tea planters have adopted sprinklers in the night to keep the tea leaves moist and protect from heavy frost, some of the planters have spread light weight husks and straws on the tea leaves to protect it during night hours.

"We are unsure, if this method will give 100% shield to the tea leaves from frost. However, they help us lessen the losses to an extent", noted the tea planters from Palada.
