Coimbatore : It was a rather jackpot day for people who participated in the Butterfly and Heritage walk that was organised as a part of Coimbatore Vizha in two different locations here on Saturday.
Coimbatore : It was a rather jackpot day for people who participated in the Butterfly and Heritage walk that was organised as a part of Coimbatore Vizha in two different locations here on Saturday.
Organised by Act for Butterflies, a Coimbatore based NGO for the conservation of butterflies, the two walks saw more than 20 people involve in butterfly watch at the Singanallur Lake and trace the Rajakesari Peruvazhi situated inside the Madukkarai Forest Range. The heritage walk was jointly organised by Coimbatore Forest Division.
During the butterfly walk, the team was able to spot 25 species of butterflies Oriental Grass Jewel, Marbled Skipper, Joker and Black spotted Pierrot.
“We spent around four hours in the lake watching butterflies and moved to Madukkarai for the heritage walk in the afternoon,” said Mohan Prasath, Founder of Act for Butterflies.
The team started their half a kilo meter trek from the forest boundary near Kovaipudhur to see a stone tablet written around 10th Century BC.
Once they reached there, they were educated about the historical importance of the place and the Rajakesari Peruvazhi, which is one of India’s oldest highways used during the Chola Rule in this region.
They were guided inside by Anti Poaching Watchers from the Madukkarai Forest Range.
Sharing his experience, Jawahar Ramachandran, a student said that he felt proud and happy to be at a age old heritage site.
“It is important that such sites are preserved and taken to the next generation to understand our heritage,” he said.
