Madras HC lifts ban; extends Pongal gift of Rs.1000 to Sugar card holders

Even as Tamilnadu Government urged the Madras High court to relax its order on disbursing Pongal gift or Rs.1000 only to the Below Poverty line (BPL) family card holders, the Court has further relaxed its yesterday's order and granted permission to include NPHSS Family cardholders with (Sugar Option) in the beneficiaries bracket.

Even as the 5,98,742 (sugar option) cardholders were restrained from receiving the Pongal gift of Rs.1000, they were left disappointed which made the Government appeal for their inclusion which resulted in today’s order.

The Madras High court had initially permitted the State to disburse money only to three categories of card holders, out of the five.

However, the relaxation is presently given to NPHSS (Sugar option) house holders who would also receive the Pongal gift.
