In a landmark move, the Union Cabinet today approved a 10 percent reservation in government jobs for economically weaker sections in the general category. Following the Cabinet approval, the next logical step would be to amending the Constitution to extend the 10 percent reservation for them.

The Narendra Modi government would have to amend Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution to make it feasible under the laws of the land. What this would effectively mean to the upper sections of the society is that they could avail job reservation for Government jobs under the general category, which has been denied to them thus far. However, the Bill should be passed by both the Houses of Parliament before it gets constitutional validity. With the functioning of the winter session of the Parliament stalled thus far, the Bill would face stumbling blocks in both Houses before it becomes a law of the land.

The Union Minister, Ramras Athawale, said, "The Government has taken a very good decision which would help a large section of the society, who are economically backward among different groups of upper castes in the nation.”
