Tirupur : The Tirupur police arrested Raghu of Kuthalam near Nagapattinam on charges of murdering a fortune teller in broad daylight near a park in Tirupur Kumaran Street. The assailant who wore a helmet had escaped from the scene, after the murder on December 24.

The police who investigated the case zeroed in on the accused and raided his house in Kuthalam. The assailant, identified as Raghu had gone underground but surrendered later in a court in Ambattur. He was arrested and sent to custody. The police who took him under custody, later revealed facts about the murder.

According to the police, Raghu who had lived in Anuperpalayam with his family was in an illicit relationship with Mohanapriya, a woman living nearby. He consulted an astrologer who promised to help him win the heart of the woman after casting a spell on her (Vasiyam) and collected Rs.50,000. It is said that thereon Mohanapriya fell in love with Raghu, who started living with her after fleeing to Mayiladuthurai. Meanwhile, based on Mohanapriya’s parent’s complaints to the police, the woman left Raghu and returned to her husband, which upset Raghu who reportedly approached the fortune teller again for a solution. After collecting Rs.2.5 lakhs, the fortune teller apparently told Raghu that he had cast the spell again and his lover would return to him.

Raghu who later moved to South Africa to work in a firm for a good salary returned within the same month haunted by memories of his long lost lady love. While consulting another astrologer in Tiruchy, Raghu was told that the fortune teller in Tirupur had cheated him which angered him. Raghu decided to take revenge and went to Tirupur where he followed the fortune teller and attacked him with iron rods, before escaping from the scene.
