Nilgiris : The ongoing renovation of the famed glass house in Government Botanical Gardens would be finished on time for Pongal holidays and thrown open for public viewing, said Horticultural department officials who have been supervising the renovation of the glasshouse in the past year or so.

Even as the ongoing renovation works of famed Glasshouse at the Government Botanical Gardens, Ooty has been stalled due to various factors, the visiting tourists were left disappointed as they could not enjoy the exotic flower varieties stationed in the glasshouse.

Finally, the Rs.2.6 crore repair and renovation works of the 20-year-old glasshouse have neared completion after four long years.

Even though the authorities completed the works and opened it for public view a few months back, in view of Chief Minister Edapadi Palasamy’s visit to the hill town, the leaky roof of the glasshouse even after renovation forced the authorities to close it again for tourists.

Substandard work carried out in the glass house was attributed as the main cause for the famed landmark developing leaky roofs. As rainwater started collecting inside the glasshouse again, authorities were forced to close it down for public viewing.

Even though officials of Tamilnadu Horticultural department, which is maintaining the world famous Botanical gardens have vouched to reopen it for public view during the second season, they could not deliver the goods on time and works remained uncompleted.

The glasshouse, in which exotic plants are maintained would be opened for public view from Pongal holidays after four long years as faults have been fixed during the renovation.
