The vandal acts might have been sparked off by the entry of women into the Sabarimala shrine for which the Communists are vociferous supporters.
According to the police, the miscreants who vandalised the CPM flag pole at Varadarajapuram, removed the flag from the pole before setting it on fire. They also damaged the DYFI blood donation board which had been put up nearby, in the same locality. In a similar incident, miscreants uprooted the CPI flag pole at Kamarajar Salai in Singanallur and set it afire. Police have taken into custody two persons and are interrogating them about the incident.
