The Nilgiris: Sanitary workers, under the Udhagamandalam Municipality petitioned to the Municipality officials today demanding proper protective gear and various other monetary benefits.
The Sanitary workers pointed that their leave surrender benefits which has been delayed since July, should be released immediately. And, the timely promotion from one grades to another has been withheld, since 2014.

The protesters alleged that the department has not been depositing their Provident fund (PF) amount deducted from their salaries at the respective offices. Due to which the employees have been denied lians based on PF.
Employees who have retired from service stated that the department has not settled them with full PF amount. Protesters demanded that contract workers should be provided job permanency and they should be provided with basic pay, as prescribed by the District Collector.

The protesting sanitary workers opined that they should be provided with proper protective gear during work. The Municipality should provide all financial assistance including paid leaves for workers getting injured during work, urged the protesters.
However, Police Inspector Kamalakannan denied permission to the protesters to agitate in front of the Municipality Office which led to a heated argument between the sanitary workers and police. Later, ten members from the protest were allowed to visit the Municipality officials and petition their grievances.
