Coimbatore: Kodaikanal and its surrounding areas have been experiencing severe cold and misty conditions, with temperatures dipping to zero degrees for the first time ever, in many years.
“The daytime temperatures continued to hover around 7 degree Celsius for the past many days but it suddenly dipped to zero degrees yesterday,” say the denizens of Kodaikanal, a hill town situated on the Palani hills of the Western Ghats.
Frost has set in at Bryant’s park, Lake Road and Botanical Garden in the past three days and the whole town is blanketed in mist making life miserable for even the locals.
“Standing crops such as carrot and garlic could face rotting due to persisting cold conditions,” said the farmers in Kodaikanal.
Selvendran, a scientist attached to the Kodaikanal Meteorological Center said such unprecedented cold conditions have not been witnessed in the past 100 years. This is the first time ever that the temperatures have dipped to zero degrees. “The high cold and frosty conditions will prevail in the hill town until February 15,” added the scientist.
