Coimbatore: The sheer number of cases filed under the POCSO act for sexual assault against children has increased in the Coimbatore range, in the current year according to G Karthikeyan, DIG (Coimbatore range).

Briefing the reporters at the police (west zone) headquarters, Karthikeyan said that the number of fatal road accidents had come down to 1309 this year as against 1970 for the corresponding period, last year. While murder cases and attempt to murder cases registered in the Coimbatore range consisting of Erode, Tirupur, and Nilgiris had come down, it is reported that while 93 murder cases have been filed this year as against 110 cases last year, 67 attempts to murder cases have been filed this year as against 67 last year.

While 70 percent of the murder for gain cases have been resolved by the police, 85 percent of stolen goods have been recovered in theft cases registered in various police stations.

“However, the cases filed under POCSO has increased to 131 in the current year as against 91 registered last year in Coimbatore, with over 305 cases filed in the West Zone consisting of four districts as against 272 cases last year,” stated the DIG of Police.

Owing to increased awareness created through awareness programs by the police about child rights and legal safeguards, the DIG said that 32 cases have been registered under the POCSO Act in Coimbatore (rural district) alone, which was shocking. The DIG warned that in general, parents and teachers should create awareness about sexual abuses perpetrated against children by anti-social elements.
