One dead as tourist van topples into a gorge near Palani

Dindigul: A tourist van with seven youth toppled into a gorge when the driver of the van they were travelling in was manoeuvering the seventh hairpin bend. One died on the spot.

According to reports, seven youngsters from Thrissur, Kerala were on their way to Kodaikanal in a van to celebrate the New Year. On the ghat section from Palani to Kodaikanal, during the wee hours of this morning, Jubin who was driving the van lost control over the vehicle at the seventh hairpin bend near Savarikkaadu area, following which the van toppled into a gorge. 

Vishnu (19) of Amala Hall near Thrissur died on the spot. Sachin, Abdul, Antony, Anis, Tishnu and Jubin sustained grievous injuries. All were rescued by the fire service. The police headed by Kodaikanal DSP, Ponnusami, rushed to the spot and carried out an investigation. 



Speaking on the accident, the Kodaikanal DSP, Ponnusami said, "People who are driving on the Palani-Kodaikanal road should be very cautious. If drivers feel sleepy, they should take rest for some time and then proceed on their journey. People should avoid night travel on this route. Youngsters should understand their responsibilities and should also refrain from drinking and driving their vehicles."
