Coimbatore: Members of the Coimbatore Street Vendors Association staged a protest in front of the Coimbatore South Taluk office here, today, seeking a permanent place for their shops.
During the protest, the members stated, "Space had been allocated for 125 vendors on Nanjappa Road by the Corporation administration, as per the orders of the Madras High Court passed in 1995.
Meanwhile, street vendors were made to evacuate their shops by the Corporation citing road extension. As we appealed seeking place to run our shops in the same area, 410 street vendors had paid Rs.2250 each, as directed, for which we also have the receipts. Mageswari who was the MLA at that time, allocated Rs.10 lakhs from the MLA fund. Despite places allocated on Nanjappa Road, Bharathiar Road and Vincent Road by Corporation, the police allows us to trade only on Nanjappa Road.
So, street vendors who had paid the advance amount should be allowed to have their shops on Nanjappa Road, Bharathiar Road, Townhall, Ukkadam and Flower Market," they added.
