Coimbatore: Farmers who cultivated shallots in Coimbatore protested in front of district Collectorate today by selling their produce for Re.1 due to low prices. The protesters sold per kilo shallots for Re.1 and another kilo for free to customers urging the State government to take necessary steps to control the fall of shallot prices.

Over 2000 farmers have cultivated shallots in Coimbatore. Due to high production, the shallot prices have gone down and farmers are forced to sell their produce at low prices. To protests against the poor prices, farmers sold shallots for Re.1 and another kilo for free to the public in front of District Collectorate today. Farmers said that they opted to protest this way as dumping them on roads wouldn’t help anybody.
The farmers petitioned with District Collector T.N Hariharan later and demanded the government to take necessary steps to determine the minimum selling price for farmers’ produce.
