Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City police are conducting various awareness drives to ensure an accident-free New Year 2019.

In the past years, several fatal road accidents have been reported at different places in the city due to overspeeding and drunken driving on New Year eve. The City police have organised various awareness sessions to prevent such incidents this year.

Deputy Police Commissioner (Traffic) Sujit Kumar and Deputy Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Dr. L Balaji Saravanan are conducting awareness drives in different parts of the city. A team led by Assistant Commissioner Raj Kanna is distributing over 5000 awareness pamphlets to motorists at different parts of the city.
The City police have also decided to cease vehicles of motorists overspeeding and drunken driving. The City police stated that legal action would be taken against those indulging in reckless driving as part of New Year revelry. The City police have diverted traffic on various flyovers in Coimbatore tonight.
Last year, IG Periaiah who was City Police Commissioner took part in cake cutting celebrations held near Avinashi Road here and drunk drivers were made to sit in tents at various places until they sobered.
Similarly, in Nilgiris, SP Shanmugha Priya said that 500 police personnel have been deployed for security in the hill station. She added that camps have been set up at 17 places including Kothagiri, Ooty, Coonoor, Pandhalur and various other places where people caught for drunken driving will be shown awareness short films and steps would be taken for their safe journey.
