Thousands of devotees visit Palani temple every day. The devottees turnout has increased in the past few days following Sabarimala season and Thai Poosam. The monkeys roaming near the temple have allegedly attacked few devottees visiting the temple and snatched away offerings from them. Some of the devotees have even suffered injuries.
Following complaints from temple authorities, the forest officials decided to capture monkeys in the area and cages with fruits were set up for the purpose. The captured animals were released into forest areas along the Kodaikanal road.
Forest officials said that over 50 monkeys were captured and released into forest area near Kodaikanal road. Officials said that the capture would continue. Officials added that monkeys won’t attack until they are being attacked. Forest officials requested devotees to not to harm or disturb the animals while visiting or returning from the temple.
