Southern Railways harnesses solar energy on Janshadapdi Express coaches

The Salem Division which was entrusted with the mission of installing solar photovoltaic panels on rooftops of coaches conducted a trial run last year on one CZ 02625 coach. It got commissioned in January last year, during GMs Annual Inspection in Salem Division. Based on its success, the division approved the provision in six more non-ac coaches in 2017-2018.



The installation works were completed at a cost of Rs 15,20,400 and the work which was started on 29th May was completed by 30th October.



Technical features

The capacity of the solar panel is 4.8 kWp / Coach.

Specification: RDSO Spec. No.PE/SPEC/TL/0186-2016 and 

Other Accessories, Microprocessor based charge controller.

The coaches have been put on services and officials said that its performance has been satisfactory. Electricity generated using the solar panels is used to power fans and lights in the coaches. Officials said that power generation is satisfactory during day time. When there is no power generation, the supply to the coach is catered from the conventional alternator / battery through a charge controller.
