Coimbatore : The organs of a 40-year-old brain dead man gave a new lease of life to four critically ill persons in Coimbatore.

N. Ponnampalam, who was working as a security guard in Saravanampatti was rushed to City's Sri Ramakrishna Hospital on December 25, after he complained of severe headache followed by recurrent episodes of vomitting. 

According to hospital reports, "On early hours of Tuesday, December 25, the 40-year old man was admitted for critical treatment here. A team of neurosurgeons under the guidance of Dr. K. Asokan, Chief Neurologist administered the best of treatment to him. However, the patient, Ponnampalam showed no signs of improvement. As he stopped showing any brain stem reflex activity, he was declared brain dead on Wednesday". 

Even in the crisis situation, the victim's family displayed courage and determination and came ahead to donate his vital organs, thus giving a lease of life to four. 

While one kidney was donated to an ailing patient at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, another kidney was sent to a private hospital in the city. His heart was sent to a private hospital in Chennai, liver was sent to another private hospital in the city and his eyes were donated to a private eye hospital in the city, the hospital reports added.
