Youngsters cheat man of Rs. 15,000 on the pretext of helping him withdraw cash in ATM

Coimbatore : Police have arrested two persons in Coimbatore who cheated Rs. 15,000 from a man's bank account in the pretext of helping him withdraw cash from ATM.

According to reports, Muruganandhan of Indira Nagar near Kannampalayam here went to an ATM centre at Singanallur to withdraw money. Another stranger, who was already in the ATM centre waiting to withdraw money voluntarily proposed to Muruganandhan to help him withdraw cash. 

Convinced by his talks, Muruganandhan gave his debit card to the stranger who withdrew the said money to Muruganandhan and left. 

Shortly after the incident, Muruganandhan received a SMS indicating that a sum of Rs 15,000 has been withdrawn from his account. Shocked by the SMS, he rushed to his bank and then informed the Cyber Crime Police.

According to cyber crime police, on investigation, it was revealed that Kapil (25) of Nilgiris and John Joseph of Coimbatore had withdrawn the money using the victim's card. Police have arrested both of them and seized Rs. 4,000 cash and a two-wheeler from them. 

Briefing on this, Police said, "The arrested duo have been extending voluntary help to senior citizens and people to have difficulty in withdrawing cash from ATMs. In this incident, both these offenders have approached Muruganandhan the same way at an ATM in Singanallur".

"While transacting, they noted the secret pin of his card and returned the money and a similar duplicate card to him, while retaining his card back with them. After he left, they have used his card and withdrwan Rs. 15,000 cash". 

"Under no circumstances, people should share their PIN number with anyone. Elderly and people who have difficulty in accessing ATM machines can bring their family members along with them instead of seeking help from strangers", the Cyber Crime Police advised.
