Mettupalayam : At last the villagers of Lingapuram and Kandavayal are at respite, as the only pathway, the bridge connecting their villages which submerged in the past rains have been cleared.
Mettupalayam : At last the villagers of Lingapuram and Kandavayal are at respite, as the only pathway, the bridge connecting their villages which submerged in the past rains have been cleared.
Following heavy rains in the Western Ghats belt in the months of July-October, most of the dams in the region reached it's full capacity and even flooded. In this regard, both Pillur and Bhavanisagar dams brimmed in full capacity engulfing hundreds of agricultural lands and houses along Mettupalayam (MTP), Bhavani and Sirumugai.
Banana cultivation in an estimated 9,000 acres faced the wrath of the floods in and around MTP. Notably, villages including Lingapuram, Kandhavayal, Kandaiyur sustained severe property damage.
Adding to their woes, the bridge across Kadaiyaru river connecting Lingapuram and Kandhavayal villages immersed completely in the heavy floods, thereby terminating the transport between the two hamlets. Replacing vehicles, the villagers were forced to use coracles to commute.
As all efforts to drain the water level in the bridge went in vain, the villagers had to wait patiently for the water to drain by itself. At last, the immersed bridge has shown it's face bringing much relief to the villagers.
As the bridge had been immersed for more than two months, many parts of the bridge is seen been eroded and damaged. Hence, heavy vehicle movement is restricted for time being. The Villagers have urged the officials to commence the repair works on warfooting and set right the setback.
Meanwhile, the villagers have jointly urged to increase the height of the bridge to 36 ft to avert such incidents in the future.
