Chennai: The Madras High Court today dismissed a plea by plastic manufacturers in Tamil Nadu to quash the State government’s statewide ban on single-use plastic from the beginning of next year.

The Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Plastic Manufacturers Association petitioned with the High Court to quash the State government’s order and they also sought an exemption for pre-manufactured biscuit and chips packets from the ban. The bench comprising of Justice S Vaidyanathan and Justice PT Asha dismissed the plea today.

According to The News Minute, Additional Advocate General Aravind Pandian, who was present in Court said that National Green Tribunal (NGT) also called for a plastic ban.

The Tamil Nadu Plastic Manufacturers’ Association (TAPMA) said that the plastic ban is 'discriminatory' and the GO permits plastic packaging for MNCs and FMCG companies. The association observed that businesses of over 200,000 small vendors, hawkers, shops and many others will be affected due to the move. The association also pointed out that 200,000 direct workers will lose their jobs and there will be GST revenue loss of Rs 1,800 crore annually.
