The Nilgiris: Sightings of Malabar giant squirrel in Coonoor's Sims Park has brought excitement among the tourists who have thronged the Nilgiris to enjoy the ongoing second season.

Endemic to the Western Ghats, the Malabar giant squirrels are spotted in groups at Sims Park in Coonoor and Longwood orchard in Kothagiri.

Plummeting across fruit bearing trees, these ruddy-colored giant squirrels are fond of fruits, especially custard apples which are bounteous in the hilly terrain of the Nilgiris.

"As these squirrels fall under the endangered species category, the forest department should take conservation measures to protect them. The tourists who sight them should not harm or chase them from their habitat", request wildlife enthusiasts.
