Coimbatore: While we are just few days away from complete plastic ban, the TN State government is bombarding with awareness campaigns to keep the people well-informed on the do's and dont's and adhere to the ban.
In one such initiative, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board on December 10 launched a special mobile Van which is aimed to tour all districts in TN to create awareness on the ill-effects of plastic. Today, the special mobile Van reached Coimbatore and awareness messages on anti-plastic were nurtured among the public at Gandhipuram bus stand area.
During the session, the public were advised to use reusable materials like stainless steel utensils/bottles, cloth bags, and bamboo products.
While, larger organisations and hoteliers have switched to eco-friendly packaging materials, the small and micro traders are skeptical to switch over to alternatives.
Citing cost and difficulty in packaging, the traders still use non-cyclable plastics, which will attract heavy fine from January 1 onwards.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami on August 23, 2018 announced a complete ban on disposable plastics from January 1. A comprehensive website www.plasticpollutionfreetn.org along with a mobile app was launched to direct the citizens on eco-friendly alternatives to plastic and the need to abide by the ban.
