Farmers’ ‘waiting’ protest enters seventh day, farmers begin hunger strike

Tirupur : The protest by farmers across Tamil Nadu against the installation of electric transmission towers in agricultural lands entered the seventh day today. Farmers are protesting in 16 other districts on the same demand and 10 farmers in Tiruppur started a hunger strike today.

In Tirupur, over 100 farmers are taking part in the protests near Kallipalayam here. Farmers from 16 districts have been protesting for past several days against the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited move to install electric transmission towers through agricultural lands here. 



Farmers said that though they requested the governments to transmit power through electric lines along Highways, they fell on deaf ears. As the seventh day, 10 of the protesting farmers started hunger strike today. MLA Thaniarasu and farmer Ayyakannu inaugurated the hunger strike.



College students nearby Tiruppur also indulged in hunger strike today expressing solidarity to the farmers. Also, during the All-party meet today, protesters decided to organise hartal in Pongallur on December 26th.
