The Nilgiris : Over 100 students and five teachers of a private school in Mettupalayam regaled themselves with nature lessons on the UNESCO-accredited Nilgiris Mountain Railway (NMR) heritage train, as part of a Nature Education Initiative, launched by the Southern Railway.
The students commenced their journey into the heart of serene landscapes and majestic hilly terrain from Mettupalayam on the heritage train. The railway officials who accompanied the students explained to them the 100 years history of the heritage railway and about the pristine locales that they passed through on its journey upward toward the Queen of Hills.

The stopovers at various stations including Kallar, Runnymede and Hill-grove were used to educate the students on nature, along with a quick snack arranged by the Railways. "The unique initiative has been launched by the Southern Railways and schools have been asked to participate in the Nature Education Initiative program which come under the tourism promotion activities of the heritage railway MNR," opined a railway official.
