According to reports, the police who were doing routine vehicle checks at Erkkampatti, Dharapuram on the night of December 20, intercepted a car with the registration TN 09 R 0502. The police became suspicious of the occupants in the car, following which the police checked the car and confiscated demonetised notes to the tune of one crore, in denominations of Rs.500 and Rs.1000. 



According to the police, the men in the car were identified as Kalai Selvan (34) of Ganapathi, Coimbatore and Pratheesh (33). 



Further investigation revealed that the demonetised notes belong to a person named Thandabani who has a gas agency at Cross Cut Road in Coimbatore. As per his instructions, both men went to Madurai carrying the demonetised notes in a car to exchange the money with a private bank employee. 

They returned to Coimbatore with the demonetised notes, as they were unable to meet the person in Madurai. On their way, they were intercepted by the police at a check post near Dharapuram. 

The police have commenced investigation.
