Madurai : The Madurai bench of Madras High Court banned private events within the Thanjavur Brahadeeswarar temple complex on Thursday considering its archaeological and cultural significance.

The Madurai bench passed the orders hearing a plea filed by N Venkatesh, from Kumbakonam against the meditation event organised by Sri Sri Ravishankar’s Art of Living (AOL) foundation on 7th of this month.
According to The News Minute, a bench consisting of justices KK Sasidharan and PD Audikesavalu ordered that the Thanjavur temple, which is a UNESCO Heritage site, was culturally important and that it stands as an example for temple architecture. It is necessary to preserve the culture and tradition of the temple and hence no permission shall be granted to conduct private events within the temple premises.
The Court observed that officers must ensure that only authorized religious events are held within the temple. The Court also asked officers to take care of the temple’s legacy, tradition and archaeological symbols.
