Coimbatore : With 860 tonnes of waste generated everyday, Coimbatore Corporation is looking at holistic solutions for waste management in the near future. In Coimbatore, 58% of waste generated is organic waste and 19% is recyclable plastic.

"To handle the organic wastes and to decentralize processing of waste, 67 micro composting centres will be set up across the city and sanction has been given for first 10 micro composting centres which will be operational by January 15", say officials from corporation.

They added that tender for 10 MCCs, will be called for in the coming week.

According to a senior CCMC official, "Four centres will be opened at Peelamedu, Ukkadam, Sowripalayam and Chokkampudur to handle dry wastes. These centres will act as central processing centres for all the recyclable plastic waste and from these centres, reusable plastic will be sent to recycling units or vendors. This will bring down the volume of dry waste at Vellalore dump yard to a considerable amount".

As far as MCCs are concerned, Coimbatore Corporation has given a proposal to GIZ, the German agency funded by the German government. The German government has tied up with three smart cities- Coimbatore, Bhubaneshwar and Kochi for implementing various projects, under the Smart City programme.

In a technical meeting held last week with GIZ, CCMC has come up with various suggestions for problems in handling solid waste management.

One such solution is setting up MCCs in OSR sites in every ward. "Generally, OSR areas are ear-marked for constructing parks, whereas law permits to utilize the OSR area for public usage, as well. With advanced technology, the MCCs are completely odourless. So, we have given a proposal to GIZ to submit to Government of India, under the Smart City programme to make MCCs mandatory in the OSR areas. This will help a long way in decentralizing waste management in the city", the official said.

Recently, a division bench of Madras High Court has noted that local administration can convert portions of parks into MCCs. The court dismissing a PIL moved by a residential association in Thiruvallur district proposed a few suggestions, with regard to waste management.

According to the division bench, "Having a proper waste management programme is one of the biggest challenges faced by any Municipality. Due to rapid urbanization, virtually no space is available for dumping. The Municipalities have therefore forced to balance the competing interests of having parks/lung space on one hand and dumping yards on the other hand."

Citing the above, the City Corporation official, here said, "CCMC has given such suggestions to GIZ which will be presented to Government of India under the Smart City development programme. If such measures are made mandatory, our city will have a holistic waste management plan to deal with our 860-tonne waste created every day".
