The Nilgiris : The second phase of wildlife census at Mudumalai tiger reserve for this year began today. 29 teams will be camping inside the forest for the census.
The tiger reserve is divided into seven forest ranges – Mudumalai, Theppakadu, Kargudi, Masinagudi, Nellakota, Singakara, Sigur and Thenkumarada. Forest officials will be checking any increase in animal population and will also be checking for availability of food and water in the forest during this census.
A training was conducted for forest department officials involved in this census At the Forest training centre in Theppakadu recently. Mudumalai Tiger Reserve field director Shembagavalli presided the training. 29 teams have been designated for the census in the deep forests and each team consists of a forest department official and two anti-poaching watchers. The teams will be camping inside the forest till December 22 for the census.
The teams will be returning to the training centre on 23rd December and handing over the census data. Similarly, 35 teams were trained today here to conduct a census at the outer areas of the reserve. Forest rangers Rajendran, Shivakumar, Suresh Kumar, Dhayanandan and Vijayan took part in the event.
