Coimbatore: Nearly 200 sanitary workers staged a protest at the Corporation building, demanding preference in employment under the Smart City program.
Coimbatore: Nearly 200 sanitary workers staged a protest at the Corporation building, demanding preference in employment under the Smart City program. According to the protestors, "More than 2000 sanitary workers are working as contract workers for a period varying between 3 to 15 years. Now the Corporation has called in for workers through the employment exchange.
Among the 500 people called in, 400 are from outside and only 100 workers who are currently working have got a call for employment. We want CCMC to give preference to the current workers working on contract basis for years." The workers have submitted a petition addressed to the Corporation Commissioner.
K Rathan Kumar of CITU opined, "The Corporation has plans to employ 2000 sanitary workers under the Smart City program of which 500 people will be recruited in the first phase. CCMC is recruiting these 500 people through the employment exchange without considering the current contract workers.
Sanitary workers face a lot of health issues, despite which they continue to work for years. They should be given preference during recruitment under the Smart City development program. Of the 2000 workers, nearly 1000 are working as contract workers since 2005. Based on seniority, the workers should be considered since there is no educational qualification needed for the job. These people will not stand a chance if they have to go through the employment exchange.
