Coimbatore : The on-going annual elephant rejuvenation camp at Thekkampatti near Mettupalayam seems to be a boon for overworked temple and Mutt elephants attending the camp.
The campsite at Thekkampatti has now been refurbished with a vast kitchen, feeding area for elephants and watchtowers. The 27 elephants at the camp seem to be enjoying themselves with some much-deserved rest, in sharp contrast to their busy days in temples.

“The overworked elephants which are made to stand in temple precincts all day long are now lying on the ground in the most relaxed manner, smearing themselves with mud, as is normal with elephants in the wild,” said the mahout of an elephant attending the camp.
“It is really a sight to behold for us, since we are seeing them take complete rest and enjoying every minute of their stay in the camp,” opined another mahout.
