Parking woes continue for visitors to the RMS office at the City Railway junction

Coimbatore : Parking woes in front of the Railway Mail Service (RMS) office at the Coimbatore Railway junction continue unabated, with visitors to the office for the purpose of sending parcels and packages having no allocated parking space.

Even as the parking facility at the back entrance of the junction was closed to make way for a multi-level parking facility which is under implementation, the only parking facility operational now is bursting at its seams due to an increasing number of vehicles parked there, everyday by commuters who take trains to work and for other purposes to nearby towns from Coimbatore.

Meanwhile, the general public who come to the RMS office for sending their dispatches are left with no option but to park their vehicles in front of the RMS office. However, they are being subjected to harassment by the lessees of the parking lot and forced to park their vehicles in the paid parking area along with other vehicles.

Venkatesh, a city denizen said, “The railway authorities should allocate separate parking lot for the use of visitors to RMS office and should not collect parking fee from them when they park their vehicles in front of the RMS office.” A social activist Kathir opines, "Those who run the parking lot demand parking fee from the visitors to the RMS. This practice should not be allowed to continue.”

However, the lessees who run the parking lot counter the accusation levied against them saying no such intimidation tactic is followed by them. "We do not force anyone to pay a parking fee if they come to RMS. But other commuters also use the same spot to park their vehicles, which is condemnable."

“A minimum parking fee of Rs.10 is collected for two-wheelers up to 4 hours and for 24 hours it is fixed at Rs.20. But these parking woes will come to an end for visitors to RMS if a separate area is earmarked for them for parking purposes,” said visitors to the RMS office.
