1kg Tomato Costlier than 1 Full Meals

Restaurants and homemakers are awestruck at the current Tomato prices. It's sold at Rs. 80 - 100 per kg in Tamilnadu whereas in Northern parts of India it's tagged at Rs. 120 per kg.

How to cook without tomatoes? Indeed a very difficult question to answer. Restaurants & caterers have temporarily removed all Tomato based dishes like Tomato rice, salads, and Chutneys from their menu cards.

Coimbatore in whole gets usually 20 loads of tomatoes on a daily basis from various parts but currently the city has to manage with just 6 loads. The demand remains the same whereas the supply is very sluggish and that's the reason behind this sudden and inappropriate price hike, says a wholesale vendor from Saibaba Colony Vegetable Market.

The average consumption of tomatoes in a nuclear family would probably vary between 2-3 kgs per week which now costs around Rs. 160 to 240. 'The prices are shocking and it's really difficult to manage without tomatoes' says Mrs. Shanthi a homemaker from Vadavalli area.

Hope the scenario changes and lip smacking tomato chutneys returns back to the table.
