Coimbatore: Amid allegations of clashes between DMK and Congress cadres in Mayiladuthurai, Youth Congress functionaries led by Coimbatore City District Youth Congress president Sudhan submitted a petition to the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner seeking protection for Congress leaders and party workers.
In the petition, Congress leaders urged the police to take action against those allegedly involved in the attack on Congress functionaries during a protest held in Mayiladuthurai. They also sought adequate police protection for Congress office-bearers and cadres in Coimbatore, alleging threats from DMK cadres.
Speaking to reporters later, Sudhan said the Congress leaders attacked in Mayiladuthurai must receive justice. He added that such incidents were condemnable, especially at a time when the Congress had extended support to TVK following the elections.
He further stated that a formal complaint had been submitted to the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner regarding the issue.
According to reports, tensions erupted in Mayiladuthurai on May 8 between Congress and DMK cadres during a protest organised by the Congress condemning the delay in inviting TVK to form the government. Following heated arguments between cadres of both parties, visuals showing torn Congress party flags further escalated tensions.
