Traders in Corporation-owned complex in a tight spot; face closure

As many as 22 traders who run shops in the Corporation-owned Bharatiar Commercial Complex at Anupparapalayampudur are worried over the decision to increase the rentals from July 1.

On Monday, the traders sought the intervention of the district administration to stall the move to increase the rates multi-fold.

“At the moment, we are giving rentals only at the rate of Rs 7 per sq ft which would go up to Rs. 38 per sq ft once the revision gets implemented. Since all of them are small-scale traders having shops dealing with sale of fruit juice, television service, tailoring and pump set repairs, the new slabs will force them to wind up their businesses”, pointed out A. Thangavel, one of the traders.

The traders further pointed out that even the rate in the private commercial complexes in the vicinity is only Rs 21 per sq ft.

According to the petitioners, they had met Corporation officials and highlighted their predicament.

“However, they have been adamant on their stance and asked us to move court if any grievances regarding the new rental slabs exist”, said Justin Babiyan, another trader.
