Coimbatore hospital treats Mauritian with esophagael cancer

Last week, when 73-year-old Mauritian businessman Ashdullah Hosen Bux walked into Gem Hospitals, he was at stage three of esophagael cancer. With chemotherapy not being very effective and lack of laparoscopic surgery facilities in Mauritius, he was referred to Gem Hospitals.

Doctors at the private hospital removed the cancerous tumour and affected part of his esophagus through minimally invasive surgery.

Eight months ago, Bux approached a gastroenterologist complaining that he was unable to swallow food. An endoscopy revealed that his scope was blocked by a large ulceric tumour. "My doctors said the cancer was in an advanced stage and had to be removed. But it could not be done in Mauritius," said Bux.

He was referred to city-based Gem Hospital to get the tumour removed laparascopically. "We did a procedure called Thoracolaparoscopic minimally invasive esophagectomy," said the hospital chairman Dr C Palanivelu.
