Silk Board Junction to get new road-cum-rail flyover by 2020

If all goes well, the traffic-stricken Silk Board Junction is likely to be decongested by 2020.

The BBMP and the BMRC on Friday mutually agreed to share the cost to build an integrated flyover and metro track from Silk Board Junction to Ragigudda Temple in Jayanagar 9th Block. The four-lane flyover, which was announced in the state budget of 2016-17, will span roughly 4km between the two points on the Outer Ring Road in south Bengaluru and is estimated to be worth Rs 330 crore.

BBMP commissioner N Manjunath Prasad said, "The Palike has agreed to pay Rs 100 crore to BMRC towards the project cost and the latter will execute the entire project."

However, the existing flyovers at Silk Board and Jayadeva Hospital Junctions will not be demolished. The new elevated road will serve as a deck for the upcoming Metro interchange stations coming up at both these traffic junctions like a road-cum-rail flyover. The total project costs Rs 800 crore and BMRC has already awarded the contract for the work which will commence soon.

One Interchange will come up at Jayadeva Hospital Junction for the Gottigere-Nagawara Metro line, while another will come up at Silk Board Junction where a new 19km line between the R V Road station and Electronic City will branch off towards K R Puram. All these lines are part of Phase II of Namma Metro.

"Work has already been awarded for the R V Road—Silk Board Junction part and work on both flyover and Metro line will have to be completed in 27 months. The total cost of the road cum rail flyover will be Rs 800 crore," said Pradeep Singh Kharola, MD, BMRCL.
