Train ticket agents arrested for fleecing passengers

Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel at the Coimbatore Junction conducted a surprise raid among agents selling e-tickets opposite the junction on Wednesday and arrested three of them as they were caught fleecing passengers.

Police sources said that the raid was conducted on the direction of P. Rajmohan, Divisional Security Commissioner of Salem Division.

The team led by inspector P. Vijayakumar saw agents selling e-tickets booked in the name of other persons to passengers at Rs. 200 to Rs. 500 more than the actual fare. They also seized tickets worth Rs. 20,000 to various destinations from them.

The police arrested S. Abdul Nabi (36) of Kurichi, A. Yasim (37) of Samiyar New Street and J. Raguvaran (23) of Pappampatti.

They were booked under Section 143 (penalty for carrying on business of procuring and supplying of railway tickets in an unauthorised manner) of The Railways Act and produced before the Judicial Magistrate–II in Coimbatore, on whose direction the trio was lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison under judicial custody.

RPF personnel were on the lookout for two more agents K.M. Sarasudeen (48), of Kuniyamuthur, and P.K. Ganesan (57), of Ondipudur, who managed to escape when the raid was conducted.
