In bid to escape, thief hits electricity pole, goes into a coma

A motorcycle thief goes into a coma after ramming an electricity pole while fleeing with a stolen bike, on Tuesday morning.

The thief, estimated to be between 30 and 35 years, stole the motorcycle parked in front of an apartment on Vincent road. He also seized two mobile phones from two people sleeping on the pavement.

The victims woke up and began chasing him. In an attempt to flee, the thief lost control of the vehicle and rammed an electricity pole on Big Bazaar street, suffering severe head injuries.

A Zaheer Hussain, 31, a fish seller from a housing unit on Vincent Road had parked his motorcycle on Monday night and gone to bed. At 3.30am on Tuesday, the thief stole the motorcycle and fled.

Subsequently, he parked the stolen vehicle in front of Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH). He robbed two mobile phones belonging to P Maleswaran, 24 from Kannivadi in Dindigul district and T Gokulnath, 23, from Thiruvarur.

The victims were at CMCH to attend to sick relatives. Since the hospital allowed only one attender per patient, the duo slept on the pavement in front of the hospital. Soon after the accused rammed the electricity pole, he became unconscious. Witnesses rushed him to CMCH where he was admitted at the intensive care unit. Since he is still in a coma, police are unable to get any details from him.

Traffic Investigation Wing (TIW-west) special sub-inspector Anaimalai registered a case against the accused who is yet to be identified. Police said, he had stolen the motorcycle from Vincent Road.

Ukkadam (crime) police will register a case against him. Regarding the mobile phone theft, Race Course police will register a separate case against him.
