CPI (M) Central panel to meet on February 17: Karat

The central committee of the Communist Party of India-Marxist will decide on the party’s alliance in States going to polls, said Prakash Karat, Polit Bureau member of the party, in Coimbatore on Wednesday.

Addressing journalists at Vilankurichi, he said the committee would meet on February 17 and 18, where the party would decide on alliance and its election strategy.

The latter would of course be in tandem with its political strategy that was decided at the all India meeting held in Vishakapatnam sometime ago.

In response to a question on the party’s alliance and strategy for West Bengal, he said the CPI (M) considered the All India Trinamool Congress to be a greater threat than the Bharatiya Janata Party, as the former suppressed democracy.

The West Bengal State party committee would meet on February 12 and 13 to decide its political strategy and thereafter the central committee would take a call.

In the budget session of Parliament, the death of Hyderabad Central University student Rohit Vemula would figure prominently and the progress of the session would depend on the Central government’s response.

He urged the Centre to pass on to the people the benefit of the fall in crude oil prices. The Centre had netted Rs. 24,000 crore in this financial year alone by keeping the excise duty high.

Since November 2014, the government had increased the excise duty nine times and three times in January 2016.
