115 activists and farmers held for train-blockade

THANJAVUR: As part of the proposed a week-long train blockade pressing a charter of seven demands including, among others, immediate constitution of Cauvery Management Board (CMB), a group of activists and farmers owing allegiance to Cauvery Rights Retrieval Committee (CRRC) blocked train near here today.

At least 115 persons including twelve women were arrested when they squatted on the railway track and blocked the Uzhavan Express train at Reddipalayam today. They were led by CRRC coordinator P Maniyarasan.

The agitators urged the Central government to drop its proposed move to set up ‘single tribunal’ for resolving interstate water disputes and to declare delta region as protected agriculture zone.

Their other demands are waiver of all crop loans without any discrimination, sanction of higher quantum as drought compensation from the National Disaster Response Fund and linking of rivers and distribution of Rs 15 lakh to the family of farmers who either died of cardiac arrest or committed suicide following the failure of their crops due to severe drought.
