Coimbatore Corporation has issued a 10-day deadline for private landowners to remove Prosopis Juliflora trees from their properties. Following Madras High Court orders, the civic body will remove the invasive species and recover costs from landowners if they fail to comply with the directive.
Coimbatore: Private landowners within Coimbatore Corporation limits have been given a 10-day deadline to remove Prosopis Juliflora trees from their properties. The civic body has warned that failure to comply will result in the corporation removing the trees and recovering the expenses from the landowners.
The directive has been issued following orders from the Madras High Court in cases W.P(MD) No. 16485/2015, 14699/2015 and W.P No. 3075/2017, dated 21.08.2026. The court has mandated the removal of Prosopis Juliflora trees from both government and private lands within Coimbatore Corporation limits.
The corporation administration has emphasized that private landowners must completely remove Prosopis Juliflora trees along with their roots within 10 days from the date of this notice. The removal must be comprehensive and thorough to prevent regrowth.
If landowners fail to remove the trees within the stipulated timeframe, Coimbatore Corporation will undertake the removal work itself. The civic body has clarified that the entire cost of the removal operation will be recovered from the respective landowners, adding a financial burden to non-compliance.
Prosopis Juliflora is an invasive foreign species that grows rapidly and depletes groundwater resources significantly. The tree also inhibits the growth of other plants in its vicinity, making it ecologically harmful. These characteristics prompted the High Court to order its removal.
