Sri Ramakrishna Hospital marked World Breastfeeding Week with a walkathon and flash mob in Coimbatore. The event highlighted the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, while the hospital showcased its Human Milk Bank, which has collected and distributed over 31.25 lakh ml of donor human milk for newborn care.

Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, in association with Sri Ramakrishna College of Nursing, observed World Breastfeeding Week by organising a Breastfeeding Awareness Walkathon and Flash Mob in Coimbatore on Tuesday to promote exclusive breastfeeding and improve awareness on maternal and child health.
The programme was inaugurated under the guidance of Coimbatore District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar in the presence of Dr. Sundar Ramakrishnan, Managing Trustee, SNR Sons Charitable Trust, C.V. Ramkumar, Chief Executive Officer, D. Mahesh Kumar, Chief Administrative Officer, doctors of Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, Dr. S. Girijakumari, Principal of Sri Ramakrishna College of Nursing, healthcare professionals, faculty members, nursing students and members of the public.
As part of the event, the hospital highlighted the contribution of its Human Milk Bank, which functions under the guidance of Medical Director Dr. S. Rajagopal and Medical Superintendent Dr. S. Alagappan. The facility has collected more than 31.25 lakh ml of donor human milk, which has been pasteurised and supplied to premature and critically ill newborns. The milk has also been distributed to hospitals in and around Coimbatore, supporting neonatal care across the region.
The awareness programme commenced at Thomas Park with an address by Dr. G. Suja Mariam, Consultant Neonatologist, who explained the importance of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life and its long-term health benefits for both infants and mothers.
Addressing the gathering, the District Collector and the Managing Trustee stressed the need to create a supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers. They said families, workplaces, healthcare institutions and society share the responsibility of encouraging breastfeeding and improving maternal and child health outcomes.
Students of Sri Ramakrishna College of Nursing presented a flash mob carrying awareness placards to educate the public on the importance of breastfeeding. The programme concluded with a walkathon flagged off jointly by the District Collector and the Managing Trustee from Thomas Park. Participants walked up to Saradhambal Temple carrying banners and placards to spread awareness on exclusive breastfeeding and maternal and child health.
