TN to Set Up Special Panel to Monitor Private School Fees: Minister Rajmohan in Coimbatore

Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Rajmohan announced in Coimbatore that the State Government will constitute a special committee comprising a retired judge and educationists to oversee private school fee structures, while stating that enrolment in government schools has increased significantly this academic year.

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Rajmohan on Thursday announced that the State Government will constitute a special committee comprising a retired judge and educationists to monitor private school fee structures, while asserting that sustained improvements in the quality of education have led to a significant increase in enrolment in government schools across the State.

Speaking to reporters at the Coimbatore International Airport, the minister said government schools have recorded a notable rise in student admissions this academic year compared to last year. He attributed the increase to growing public confidence in the standards of education, particularly among parents opting to enrol their children in primary classes.

“Government schools are our eyes. Those eyes have found a new light. The steady rise in admissions reflects the enhanced quality of education in government schools,” he said.

Rajmohan said the School Education Department is also strengthening digital education by introducing Computer Science textbooks from Class VI onwards. He added that the government would continue efforts to appoint Computer Science instructors to effectively implement the initiative.

Announcing a key policy initiative, the minister said a special committee comprising a retired judge and eminent educationists would be formed to examine fee structures and collection practices in private schools. The panel would study the existing system and submit recommendations to the government to ensure greater transparency and accountability in fee regulation.

On infrastructure development in government schools, Rajmohan acknowledged that the funds currently allocated for the maintenance of school campuses, particularly toilets and sanitation facilities, were inadequate in several institutions. He said the government would seek the approval of Chief Minister Vijay to enhance maintenance grants so that schools could provide a cleaner and more conducive learning environment.

Responding to a question on Chief Minister Vijay’s reported visit to Karnataka, Rajmohan said all details regarding the Chief Minister’s travel schedule and official engagements would be announced only by the Chief Minister’s Office. “People should not rely on unofficial information. Since it is a sensitive issue involving two States, it would not be appropriate to comment on it at this stage,” he said.

When asked about the film Jananayagan, the minister declined to comment, saying that those associated with the film were best placed to respond to questions relating to it.
