Coimbatore: A 46-year-old road accident victim from Tiruppur district gave the gift of life to multiple patients through organ donation after being declared brain-dead at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

The deceased, Dharmar (46) a resident of Senguttai Narayanapuram in Palladam taluk, sustained severe injuries in a road accident on July 25 and was later referred to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Despite intensive medical care, doctors declared him brain-dead. Following counselling by the medical team, his family consented to donate his organs under the provisions of the Human Organ Transplantation Act.

On July 29, doctors successfully retrieved his vital organs including kidneys, liver and corneas. The organs were allocated to various hospitals through the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (TRANSTAN) in accordance with the prescribed organ allocation protocol.

Following the organ retrieval procedure, Dharmar's body was handed over to his family with full honours. The Dean of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, along with doctors, nurses and hospital staff, paid their final respects to the donor before the body was handed over to his family.

The family's decision to donate the organs is expected to benefit multiple patients awaiting life-saving transplants, underscoring the importance of organ donation in saving lives.
