Coimbatore City Traffic Police, RTO Crack Down on Illegal Air Horns and Traffic Violations

More than 10 vehicles fitted with illegal air horns and other unauthorised accessories were booked during a joint enforcement drive conducted by the Coimbatore City Traffic Police (West) and the Central Regional Transport Office (RTO) at Thudiyalur as part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety.

Coimbatore: As part of its sustained efforts to reduce road accidents and strengthen traffic enforcement, the Coimbatore City Police and the Coimbatore Regional Transport Office (Central) carried out a joint vehicle inspection at Thudiyalur on Mettupalayam Road, targeting vehicles with illegal modifications and other traffic violations.

During the drive, officials used a digital decibel meter to check the noise levels of vehicle horns. More than 10 private buses, tourist buses and lorries were found fitted with air horns emitting noise levels above the permissible 100-decibel limit. The illegal air horns were seized and the vehicle owners were fined.

The enforcement drive also targeted overspeeding vehicles, overloaded goods carriers, glare-inducing LED lights and unauthorised bumper guards. High-intensity LED lights and illegal bumper guards were removed from offending vehicles, while overloaded goods vehicles were weighed using a weighbridge. Officials imposed penalties of ₹2,000 for every excess tonne carried beyond the permissible limit.

The inspection was led by West Traffic Inspector Periyasamy and Regional Transport Office (Central) Motor Vehicle Inspector Kumar, with personnel from the Traffic Police and the RTO participating in the operation.

Officials said the special enforcement campaign has been underway for the past two weeks under the directions of the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner as part of a broader initiative to improve road safety and ensure better compliance with traffic regulations. They noted that road accidents in Coimbatore district have declined by 22 per cent this year compared to the previous year and said such enforcement drives would continue across the city to further bring down accident rates and make roads safer for motorists and pedestrians alike.
