Turning Waiting Time into Reading Time: Coimbatore SP Inaugurates Library at Madukkarai Police Station

With an aim to encourage reading and make police stations more welcoming public spaces, the Dr. Kalam Foundation inaugurated a public library at the Madukkarai Police Station in the presence of Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police Pavan Kumar Reddy. School students took part in the programme and gained first-hand insights into the functioning of a police station.

Coimbatore: In a unique initiative that seeks to transform police stations into more welcoming public spaces while fostering a culture of reading, a new public library established by the Dr. Kalam Foundation was inaugurated at the Madukkarai Police Station by Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police Pavan Kumar Reddy on Tuesday.

Adding a special dimension to the programme, students from a private school were invited to be part of the inauguration. Beyond witnessing the launch of the library, the students were introduced to the day-to-day functioning of a police station, making the visit both educational and interactive.

Speaking to reporters, Akash, a member of the Dr. Kalam Foundation, said the organisation has already established six public libraries across Coimbatore, including at the Coimbatore International Airport, the Regional Passport Office and even inside autorickshaws, with the objective of taking books closer to people in their everyday lives.

He said the initiative draws inspiration from the vision of former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who firmly believed that reading is the foundation for nurturing informed, responsible and progressive citizens. The library at Madukkarai Police Station, he added, reflects that vision by making books accessible in an unconventional yet meaningful public space.

Akash also announced that, with the support of Superintendent of Police Pavan Kumar Reddy, similar libraries are planned in all 34 police stations across Coimbatore district. In addition, the Foundation intends to establish libraries titled “Waiting Room” in government schools within the next six months.

These libraries will house biographies of eminent personalities, inspirational literature and books for competitive examinations, including UPSC, with the aim of encouraging students to develop reading habits and career aspirations.

During the event, Madukkarai Police Inspector Rajendraprasad took the students on a guided tour of the police station, explaining how complaints are received and processed, the responsibilities of various police personnel and the day-to-day functioning of the station. The interaction gave the students a rare opportunity to observe policing firsthand and helped demystify the functioning of a police station.

The students described the visit as a memorable learning experience, saying it gave them a better understanding of how the police serve the public while also reinforcing the importance of cultivating the habit of reading. Many said it was their first visit to a police station and that the interaction helped dispel several misconceptions while offering practical insights into the role of law enforcement.

The event was attended by members of the Dr. Kalam Foundation, Assistant Commissioner of Police Suresh, Madukkarai Police Inspector Rajendraprasad, police personnel, the headmaster of the participating private school and students.
